DIFFERENCE OF AC UNIT AND AIR HANDLER?
There has never been a better time to buy a new HVAC system than now. HVAC system manufacturers have made it surprisingly practical and affordable to heat and cool any living space, even without ductwork. The only obstacle to completing a purchase is knowing what type of gear to buy. The plethora of components and complete systems could intimidate any savvy buyer. To address these concerns, one of our South Brunswick technicians answered one of the most common HVAC questions: What is the difference between an air conditioner and an air conditioner?
WHAT IS AIR HANDLER UNIT?
An air conditioner will most likely be in the home as part of a split system air conditioner or heat pump. An internal fan distributes the conditioned air throughout the house for greater comfort. Often confused with a stove because of their similar appearance, an air handling unit can work with both heating and cooling devices (split system air conditioning or heat pump). The most common type of air handling unit found in homes is known as a terminal unit, which consists of an air filter, a fan and a coil. The inner coil is used to keep the air at a certain temperature. The air filter is used to remove airborne contaminants. The most efficient air conditioners are equipped with variable speed motors.

WHAT IS AN AIR CONDITIONER?
Unlike air conditioners, air conditioners are usually located outside of the home. Rather than blowing conditioned air throughout the home like an air conditioner, the primary function of an air conditioner is to remove heat from inside the home. To do this, warm interior air is routed through recirculation ducts and then over a cooling coil in the air conditioning system. Contrary to popular belief, a house is not cooled by supplying cold air, but by extracting heat from the air and transporting it out of the house. In the process known as the Joule-Thomson effect, hot air is passed over a condenser coil, causing the heat to escape. There are many more moving parts in the unit, but that’s basically what an air conditioner does.
